REMEMBERING TOMIE on October 2, 2020

Tomie created this mural in 1958 for the Dominican Sisters of Peace in Niskayuna, New York, outside of Schenectady. Tomie would have been 23 or 24 years old at the time.

He used a painting technique he learned at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture: true fresco, or buon fresco. Pigments, ground in water, are applied to wet plaster. The color becomes part of the wall.

We visited the Dominican Retreat and Conference Center several years ago and the mural looked to Tomie as vibrant and fresh as it did when he finished it in 1958. Very exciting and satisfying for him.
