REMEMBERING TOMIE on October 6, 2020

You’re a contestant on “Jeopardy.”

ANSWER: SOLOMON GRUNDY, BORN ON ONEDAY: A FINITE ARITHMETIC PUZZLE, by Malcolm E. Weiss, illustrated by Tomie dePaola

QUESTION: Which of Tomie dePaola’s FOURTEEN books published in 1977 is selling well in a Chinese language edition?

A royalty statement came yesterday for this book, so that’s what prompted the remembrance.

Many of Tomie’s books are published in China, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. (We were once at an autographing in Boston and a young woman studying at Harvard came to the autographing with her childhood Chinese language edition of NOW ONE FOOT, NOW THE OTHER.)

Although I think the Chinese language edition of SOLOMON GRUNDY was published in China, Malcolm E. Weiss’ obituary says it was published in Taiwan.

Tomie’s books are often used to help children learn English, but I’m not sure why this book is popular. It’s an arithmetic book.

There’s a bit of irony here. Tomie struggled with arithmetic. (Bob)
