For many years, New London’s Santa wore clothes designed by Tomie and patterned after Tomie’s Santa in his book, COUNTRY ANGEL CHRISTMAS. I hope Santa, attired in Tomie-wear or not, visited your home yesterday morning.
My yesterday. Well, God didn’t bother to consider MY plans for the day.
When I got up in the morning, I was relieved that the torrential rain and the snow on the roofs hadn’t caused a roof to collapse.
As I was sitting at one of the desks in the barn, I heard a gurgling noise. Not a good indoor sound.
The perimeter drains were not moving the rain coming off the roofs quickly enough, and water was streaming throughout the barn. The movie title, “A River Runs Through It,” and the song title, “Rainy Days and Mondays,” came to mind.
I went into the house and standing at the top of the basement stairs, I heard a noise similar to an open bathtub faucet. Again, not a good indoor sound.
I wasn’t surprised to see water covering much of the basement floor. There was a gusher pouring in from one area.
It occurred to me that during Tomie’s thirty-plus years of adding structures, and roof surfaces, to the house and barn, the perimeter drainage system had never been examined and updated. My first maintenance project for 2021 has been identified.
Because Tomie was rather childlike about Christmas, his absence yesterday was especially noticed. (Bob)
