REMEMBERING TOMIE on August 22, 2020

Tomie entered Weston Priory in Weston, VT, in the mid-1950s. I believe he learned about the priory while he was a student at Pratt Institute. His friend Delli showed him an article about the priory, founded in 1952, in the NEW YORK TIMES, if I’ve correctly remembered the publication. His name was brother Placid. But he left after six months because of psychosomatic headaches. Tomie had loved the meditative silence of the priory, but the silence was most likely the cause of the headaches.

Tomie remained friendly with the brothers after he left. The priory will be his final resting place.

The brothers visited Tomie at his home in June, 2009. We then formed a caravan so the brothers could meet Christine and Martin Marklin and their children, and see their candle business in Contoocook, NH. (Bob)
