REMEMBERING TOMIE on September 5, 2020

Guy Kawasaki, former director of software product management for Apple Computer, began a chapter in his business book, HOW TO DRIVE YOUR COMPETITION CRAZY (Hyperion, 1995):

“During a trip to Hawaii my wife forced me to stop working on this book and visit the Honolulu Academy of Arts. A book called THE KNIGHT AND THE DRAGON caught my eye at the Academy’s exhibit of children’s book illustrators.

“This book, by a famous children’s author named Tomie dePaola, explains how to renounce conventional expectations (a knight and a dragon must fight each other). DePaola’s book shows how to make enemies into allies (‘strategic alliances,’ in current business parlance) better than anything I’ve ever seen. Fortunately, he was kind enough to permit me to reprint his book in its entirety.”

The title of the chapter that featured THE KNIGHT AND THE DRAGON was “Make the Competition Into a Friend.”

It seemed like an odd idea to write a chapter in a business book around Tomie’s children’s book, but Guy Kawasaki, in his inscription for Tomie, wrote, “Your book’s inclusion is a real coup for me.” (Bob)
