REMEMBERING TOMIE on September 8, 2020

“Tomie dePaola’s Mother Goose,” was one production of several, based on Tomie’s books, at Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) in Minneapolis.

CTC “is the nation’s largest and most acclaimed theatre” for multigenerational audiences. Its main stage theatre has nearly 800 seats.

“CTC is the only theatre focused on young audiences to win the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre.”

In the program notes, Tomie wrote:

“I’ve told younger illustrators that doing a children’s book is very much like theatre… I think back to 1953-54 at Pratt Institute when Richard Lindner, who taught us sophomores our first class in illustration entitled ‘Creative Expression,’ told us to all join Playshop, the extra-curricular theatre club. ‘Theatre is probably as important to an illustrator as being able to draw,’ he said.”

“Tomie dePaola’s Mother Goose” was part of the 1995-1996 Season. (Bob)
