Tomie was not very good as a team player on committees because of his, shall I say, confidence in his opinions.
Yet, he was always happy to travel to Washington, DC, to help judge the Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) poster contest and hang out with friend Lynda Johnson Robb and the likes of Anne Richardson, “Patron of Literacy” (NEW YORK TIMES), and wife of former Attorney General Elliot Richardson.
Tomie created this drawing for the finalist of the 1987 RIF contest.
One year, Tomie was given one of the finalist’s drawings. He chose ten-year-old Regina’s drawing of a scene in the Gulf of Mexico or the ocean. Regina was a fifth grader in Louisiana.
Decades later, in September, 2018, I came across Regina’s drawing and noticed her application information on the back of the drawing. With the help of the internet, I was able to write to Regina and ask her if she wanted the drawing returned to her. She was thrilled.
We found it especially interesting that she, as an adult, chose a career as an environmental scientist in Louisiana seemingly foreshadowed in her fifth grade RIF drawing. (Bob)
