Tomie had a bread baking obsession several years ago. The bread he made was amazing. So, he was rather outspoken about everyone else’s bread. A bread-making machine? Heavens, no!
His favorite bread-making book was THE ITALIAN BAKER, by Carol Field. He knew Carol Field and infrequently exchanged notes with her and occasionally saw her in San Francisco.
He also loved NANCY SILVERTON’S BREADS FROM THE LA BREA BAKERY. He met Nancy Silverton while we were in Los Angeles, and after having lunch with Halle Stanford of the Jim Henson Company.
Tomie loved “The Great British Baking Show.” During one season’s episode of “Bread Week,” Tomie became “hot under the collar” when the making of ciabatta was the challenge
As an intense sports fan might yell at the television when a player or team made unforced errors, there was Tomie yelling at the screen, “That’s NOT ciabatta!” when the “perfect” ciabatta was presented.
Tomie didn’t lack passion. (Bob)
